Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia leaf oil) has been referred to as “the wonder from Down Under.” It comes from the melaleuca tree, which is native to Australia and has long been used by the Aborigines.
Tea tree oil's sharp, clean aroma and beneficial properties make it a popular ingredient in shampoos, creams, skin cleansers and other external cosmetic applications. The compounds in tea tree oil benefit the skin and are non-irritating. It also exhibits antiseptic properties.
Tea tree oil is recommended for external use only in poultices and other skin-cleansing applications. It has been used for skin irritations, hair loss, pain and as an antiseptic.
Melaleuca tree oil contains several important compounds, including terpines, cymones, pinines, terpinen-4-ol, sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpene alcohols.
NOTE: Essential oils may be used aromatically or topically in a variety of ways including diffusers, massages, compresses, baths, scrubs, lotions and sprays. Essential oils should be diluted with a massage oil or carrier oil before applying topically.
