Black walnut trees are native to the USA and used for both their wood and their nuts.

The shells of black walnuts are very hard to crack making it difficult to get at the nut meats which have a distinct flavor different from the more well-known English walnuts.

Before the nut hardens, the thick green hull protecting it is harvested as an herbal remedy. These hulls contain a large amount of tannins that can reduce inflammation , swelling and mucus in the body. They are also rich in iodine and antioxidants and contain a compound called juglone that works against parasitic worms.
