This kiwi fruit size gland near the rectal wall and surrounding the urethra in men has important functions in the male reproductive system. It is an exocrine gland, secreting through a duct.

The prostate is central to men’s sexual health. It is responsible for producing semen, the fluid that contains sperm.

The alkaline fluid that the prostate secretes makes up about 25% of semen. This prostate fluid carries the bulk of the sperm, including the most active leading sperm, protecting these fertile cells from damage by acids.
